Positive Classrooms

Positive Classroom Management Strategies

Northern Bay College (NBC) is committed to providing a safe, predictable and inclusive learning environment where every student can engage and succeed in their learning.

A key part of this commitment is our use of Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS). These strategies are evidence-based and focus on maximising learning time, strengthening student engagement, and creating consistent expectations across all classrooms.

A core feature of PCMS is the explicit teaching of classroom expectations and routines.

Students are directly taught what is expected, with clear modelling, guided practice, and consistent feedback provided by teachers.

All expectations at NBC are designed to be observable, measurable, positively stated, understandable, and always applicable. This ensures students have a clear understanding of what success looks like in every learning environment and can confidently meet expectations across different settings and situations.

Teachers consistently reinforce positive behaviours while proactively supporting students to remain engaged, regulated, and successful in their learning.

Staff also use trauma-informed practices to better understand and respond to student behaviour, with a focus on safety, relationships, and emotional regulation.

This helps ensure students feel supported, respected, and ready to learn.

These approaches are embedded within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), which ensures every student receives the right level of support.

This includes universal strategies for all learners, as well as targeted and intensive supports where needed.

Together, these practices create a consistent, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
