Berry Street Education Model

At Northern Bay College, we want every student to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. To help us do this, all staff learn about how children develop, how they learn best, and how we can support their emotional needs.

One of the main approaches we use is the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). This model is used in every learning community across our school.

What is BSEM?

BSEM identifies student’s strengths and equips teachers with practical, proven strategies to create calm, predictable, and learning-focused classrooms. It drives higher student engagement and ensures every learner is supported to thrive and succeed.

How BSEM helps your child:

  • More engaging learning: Teachers use BSEM strategies to help students stay focused, motivated, and involved in their learning.
  • Emotional regulation: Students learn simple, helpful ways to recognise and manage their emotions during the school day.
  • Positive relationships: Teachers use consistent routines and communication to build strong, trusting relationships with students.
  • Growth and confidence: Students learn skills that help them persist, try new things, and develop a positive attitude towards learning.

By using BSEM across the school, we aim to create a learning environment where every child feels understood, supported, and ready to achieve their best.

The BSEM is made up of five key domains.
