Years 7 – 9

Year 7 – 9 Stage of Learning

Years 7–8 Program

The Year 7 and 8 curriculum at Northern Bay College is designed to strengthen the knowledge and skills students need as they progress into the later years of schooling and beyond to further education and employment. These year levels are delivered across our four P–8 campuses, with programs and initiatives that support a smooth transition into a secondary learning environment.

Our focus is on developing confident, self-motivated and lifelong learners. We aim to meet the diverse needs of every student through engaging and meaningful learning experiences.

Curriculum Overview

Students study a broad range of core subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, and SEED Sport.

In English, students participate in literacy activities that develop their reading, writing and text analysis skills. Text studies are central to the reading program, helping students explore character, themes and meaning. Students also strengthen their comprehension through conferencing and guided reading, while writing is taught through a genre-based approach.

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) program provides targeted literacy support for students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Specialist EAL teachers deliver dedicated classes, with additional support provided in mainstream classrooms by Multicultural Education Aides.

Mathematics – Maths Pathway

Mathematics is delivered through the Maths Pathway program, which combines classroom teaching with an online learning environment to support personalised learning. This approach allows teachers to respond to individual learning needs while helping students develop problem-solving skills, independence, collaboration and a growth mindset in mathematics.

Extension Programs

Year 7 and 8 students also have opportunities to explore their interests through specialised programs, including:

Year 9 Program

Year 9 is an important stage of learning at Northern Bay College as students transition from our Junior Campuses to the Goldsworthy campus. We recognise that this move can be challenging, so our program includes a structured transition process to support students as they prepare for senior school, future careers and their role in the wider community.

Our Year 9 program focuses on three key areas: building a culture that celebrates learning and growth, developing student agency so students can make informed decisions, and providing opportunities for deep and meaningful learning.

A strong emphasis is placed on developing learner agency, encouraging students to take an active role in their learning and engage confidently in their learning community.

Choosing Your Year 9 Subjects

Students study five core subjects in Year 9: English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and Health and Physical Education. These subjects develop essential skills such as critical thinking, personal and social capability, and ethical and intercultural understanding.

Students also select from a range of semester-based electives. The 2026 Subject Handbook provides further information to help students make informed choices about their studies.
