At Northern Bay College, our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum supports students to develop the skills they need to understand themselves, build positive relationships, and navigate challenges with confidence.

We draw on evidence-based approaches including the Respectful Relationships and Berry Street Education Model, which guide our teaching of emotional regulation, resilience, and positive behaviour. Students are also introduced to the Zones of Regulation, helping them to recognise their feelings and develop practical strategies to manage them in different situations.

These approaches are embedded across everyday classroom practice to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where every student feels known and valued.
By working in partnership with families, we aim to strengthen each child’s sense of belonging and wellbeing, supporting them to thrive both at school and beyond.

What Is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness means paying attention to what is happening right now. It helps children and adults to focus on the present instead of worrying about the past or the future.
Many of us have worried about something that never actually happened. Mindfulness helps children feel calmer and more in control.
Across our College, students from Prep to Year 12 are learning simple mindfulness skills to help them focus, manage their emotions, and show kindness to themselves and others.

Why Mindfulness Matters?
Benefits for children and teens: We know from research that mindfulness…
– Reduces stress, depression and anxiety
– Improves focus and attention in learning
– Builds resilience and emotional regulation
– Strengthens empathy and positive relationships
We know that with the increase in social media, especially short videos and reels, children’s and teens’ brains are changing. This can affect their ability to focus and concentrate (attention fragmentation). Mindfulness is a simple and practical way to help strengthen attention, build calm, and support healthy brain development.
Mindfulness in Classrooms
