Primary School Citizenship Award

By Pearl Bottrel

Hello everyone, I’m Pearl Bottrell and I would like to tell you about my experience when I competed in the Australian Citizenship Award.

Before I could compete in the Australian Citizenship award I had to send in an application to try and compete. I was one of the lucky people and got accepted out of a lot of people and I was One of the Eight. Since I got accepted I made a presentation for the day.

When I got there I was very nervous because everyone looked so prepared but they were just as nervous as me which made me feel a bit better. Just before I was about present and then I had some challenges because I thought I couldn’t do it, everyone even told me if I didn’t want to do it I didn’t have to but I had worked so hard I really wanted to so I got up there and presented and I felt so good after and happy I tried.

Even though I didn’t win it was a great experience for me but I was happy because I was one of the finalists!

Chocolate Factory Excursion

Our students recently enjoyed a fantastic excursion to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie! The day provided a wonderful opportunity for students to take their learning beyond the classroom while exploring how chocolate is made and learning more about the processes involved in creating some of their favourite treats. This was linked to their Chemical Science unit of solids, liquids and gasses. Students had the chance to explore the Chocolaterie, participate in engaging activities and, of course, enjoy some delicious chocolate along the way! It was wonderful to see students demonstrating curiosity, enthusiasm and excellent behaviour throughout the excursion. They had the opportunity to make a giant chocolate lollipop to take home, sampling 12 products and having an ice-cream. Students then travelled to Coogoorah Park Playground to enjoy lunch and a play on the playground equipment.

Hands on Science

During week 8 & 9, all the year 5/6 students have participated in a Hands on Science incursion on campus. Students consolidated their learning about Solids, Liquids and Gases and learnt about acid, bases and different types of chemical reactions.Β

Working in small groups, the students completed 5 experiments – mixing different chemicals and observing the reactions and changes – some experiments resulted in the chemicals bubbling, fizzing, exploding, heating, cooling and changing colour. The students were able to make predictions and observations – lots of minds were blown with all the cool reactions we saw!

Science at Hendy

This term, Grade 5/6 students have explored chemical reactions through exciting hands-on experiments.

They investigated reactions using bicarbonate volcanoes and Pepsi and Mentos, observing how substances interact and change. Students also designed filtration systems, exploring how different materials can be used to separate mixtures and improve water clarity.

They are looking forward to sharing their knowledge with families and friends during their ERP Expo in Week 10!

Science at Wexford

The Year 5/6 students have been learning about the three states of matter: solids, liquids and gases. They have been doing different experiments to understand how matter can change and how different materials behave. Some of the experiments they have completed include making ice cream using salt and ice, creating oobleck, making lava lamps and investigating evaporation. These activities have helped the students understand science in a fun and hands-on way.

During the experiments, the students have been observing what happens when different materials are mixed, heated, cooled or changed. They have been making predictions, testing their ideas and looking at the results to see if their predictions were correct. They also completed a balloon inflation experiment to investigate how gases behave. These experiments have helped the students learn more about solids, liquids and gases while also developing their skills in observing, questioning and explaining what they see.
